DESCRIPTION:Please join us for "The Warrior Identity: Veterans\, Survivor 
 Obligation\, and Civic Commitment Throughout U.S. History\," presented by
  Dr. Stephen A. Goldman. (Lunch will be provided).\n\nTime and again\, Am
 ericans without prewar military training or experience have evolved into 
 professional soldiers\, sailors\, and Marines to rival the finest in the 
 world. In this process\, pride in their comrades and units\, and what the
 y endured and accomplished together\, have constituted major components o
 f a powerful warrior identity. Contrary to those who believe combat’s emo
 tional impact is solely destructive\, this self-esteem\, which is sustain
 ing during uniformed service\, underpins the great personal and occupatio
 nal success\, posttraumatic growth\, societal responsibility\, and surviv
 or obligation that US veterans have shown throughout the nation’s history
 . Assessing these remarkable phenomena requires an interdisciplinary appr
 oach\, which is why this presentation will draw upon psychological insigh
 ts gained since the 1860s\, a psychiatrist’s decades of ongoing scientifi
 c and historical research on veterans\, past and present\, and related cl
 inical experience.\n\nThis event is being presented jointly by the Ackerm
 an Center for Holocaust Studies and the Military and Veterans Center free
