SUMMARY:Mechanistic Literacy in the Age of Generative AI: Critique‑Centere
d Pedagogy in Graduate Organic and Medicinal Chemistry
LOCATION:313 Templeton
DESCRIPTION:Poster Presentation\n\nPresenters: Dr. Amol Kulkarni\, Associa
te Professor\, Chemistry and Biochemistry\n\nThis session examines how ge
nerative AI can be incorporated into graduate‑level organic and medicinal
chemistry as an object of analysis rather than a source of answers. It f
ocuses on the design of critique‑centered assignments in which PhD studen
ts evaluate AI‑generated mechanisms\, retrosynthetic plans\, and syntheti
c strategies for complex targets and catalyzed reactions. By working thro
ugh examples from an advanced organic/medicinal chemistry course\, partic
ipants will see how AI outputs can be used to expose gaps in mechanistic
reasoning\, stereochemical control\, and strategic planning\, and how str
uctured critique can reinforce students’ disciplinary expertise.\n\nThe c
hallenge this session addresses is the disconnect between widespread acce
ss to generative AI and the expectation of deep\, domain‑specific reasoni
ng in graduate STEM education. In advanced chemistry courses\, students c
an now delegate mechanism and synthesis tasks to AI without engaging the
underlying concepts\, yet these tools also have genuine value for explori
ng alternative pathways and revealing blind spots. The session frames a c
oncrete opportunity: designing AI‑mediated assignments that require stude
nts to analyze\, correct\, and reflect on AI proposals\, thereby strength
ening mechanistic thinking\, ethical AI literacy\, and preparedness for r
esearch environments where AI will be present but not reliably correct.\n
