SUMMARY:Anthropology’s Annual Visiting Lecture Series - Legacies of War
LOCATION:Art and Architecture Building 111\, 1715 Volunteer Boulevard\, Kn
 oxville\, TN 37996
DESCRIPTION:Conflict and Community in a Mountain Landscape: An Archaeology
of Peruvian Hillforts\n\nSpeaker: Dr Elizabeth Arkush\, University of Pi
ttsburgh\n\nViolent conflict in the late pre-Columbian Peruvian altiplano
structured landscapes and communities in fundamental ways and reshaped u
nderstandings of gender\, group identity\, territory\, and ancestors. Thi
s talk draws on two decades of archaeological fieldwork among the hillfor
t settlements (pukaras) of Peru's Titicaca Basin to explore the forms of
Andean community that crystallized around conflict. I consider pukaras\,
and the societies they sheltered\, within a broader panorama of war-relat
ed political dynamics over Andean time and space.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app
