SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH: Literature and Emergency Law in Kashmir and Northern
 Ireland
LOCATION:Building 80 Auditorium\, 450 Jane Stanford Way\, Building 80\, St
 anford\, CA 94305
DESCRIPTION:The Department of African and African American Studies (DAAAS)
in collaboration with the Center for South Asia (CSA) cordially invite t
he Stanford Community for a special book launch!\n\nWe are excited to cel
ebrate the publication of a new book by our visiting postdoctoral scholar
\, Danny Shanhan\, Ph.D titled\, Literature and Emergency Law in Kashmir
and Northern Ireland.\n\nThis book is the first substantial study of emer
gency law's relationship to literature in either the Northern Irish or th
e Kashmiri conflict and develops an original legal history that links the
se laws to a shared British colonial root. Engaging a wide range of ficti
on\, poetry and film\, from canonical poets Seamus Heaney and Agha Shahid
Ali to contemporary works by Anna Burns\, Mirza Waheed\, and Bollywood f
ilmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj\, the book examines the literary response to the
suspension of normative legal rights such as habeas corpus\, the right t
o silence and even\, in Kashmir\, the right to life. By bringing these li
terary cultures together for the first time\, it develops a literary and
legal history that reveals common roots in colonial-era jurisprudence. Th
e book re-situates these corpora\, often isolated in scholarly work\, as
important parts of the global\, material legacies of colonialism.\n\nJoin
us for an evening of conversation\, community and celebration and Danny
shares his work. This will be followed by a discussion and Q&A with Roann
e Kantor\, Assistant Professor of English.\n\nRefreshments will be provid
 ed.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/0bf9de64-ff13-43a4-be46-0643401114a7
