SUMMARY:Opening Reception: “Satire\, Sympathy\, and Social Critique: Willi
 am Hogarth’s Progress Prints"
LOCATION:Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library\, 121 Wall Street\, New H
 aven\, CT 06511
DESCRIPTION:Drawing from the rich William Hogarth collections of Yale’s Le
wis Walpole Library\, “Satire\, Sympathy\, and Social Critique” investiga
tes the power and reverberating impact of the artist’s acclaimed “moral p
rogress” prints. Hogarth’s contemporaries immediately recognized these wo
rks for their ability to both entertain and call out cruelty and injustic
e\, and artists and publishers over the following centuries have engaged
with Hogarth’s modern moral subjects through appropriation and parody.\n\
nThe exhibition features six of Hogarth’s “moral progresses\,” which are
simultaneously satirical and empathetic\, as well as additional archival
context on the artist’s commitment to social and political advocacy. Sele
cted examples of responses and reuses of Hogarth’s prints\, both written
and visual\, from the 18th to the 21st centuries\, demonstrate the contin
ued and enduring relevance of these works.\n\nPlease join us on Thursday\
, November 12\, 2026\, for the joing opening celebration of “Satire\, Sym
pathy\, and Social Critique: William Hogarth’s Progress Prints\," and "Ca
ve Canem: A Home for Black Poetry" and "Beauty Unadorned: ‘Fire!!’ and th
e Harlem Renaisance."\n\nRemarks begin at 4:30 p.m. This event is free an
 d open to the public.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/101abc6c-6a00-4cff-9
