SUMMARY:Marcela Ibáñez — Authoritarian Aid and Democratic Attitudes: Backl
 ash\, Not Diffusion
DESCRIPTION:How does the local presence of an authoritarian power shape ci
tizens' commitment to democracy? Existing theories suggest engagement wit
h authoritarian states should weaken democratic commitment through norm d
iffusion\, accommodation\, or authoritarian learning. This paper challeng
es that expectation by examining Chinese development finance in Latin Ame
rica. Using geocoded data\, it estimates the subnational effect of exposu
re to Chinese aid on democratic attitudes. Exposure increases support for
democracy rather than undermining it. The effect is strongest in authori
tarian and weakly democratic settings and absent in consolidated democrac
ies. Exposure does not improve perceptions of China or the United States\
, casting doubt on soft power or foreign-comparison explanations. Instead
\, the paper argues that visible Chinese projects make incumbents' author
itarian character more salient\, triggering an accountability response. T
hese findings recast authoritarian external influence as a contingent cat
alyst for democratic reinforcement.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\n\nMarcela Ibáñe
