ce of Śiva Devotion: Examining a Dramatic Cultural Moment in Premodern So
 uth India
LOCATION:Tamiami Hall 121\, 11200 SW 8 Street\, Miami\, FL 33199
DESCRIPTION:Why would a classical\, centuries-old literary culture suddenl
y—over the brief period of just a few decades—make way for a very new kin
d of literature? And what would such rapid change look like on a textual
level? In this lecture\, Dr. Gil Ben-Herut will discuss a dramatic moment
in the history of Kannada literature that occurred during the second hal
f of the twelfth century and was tied to the emergence of a devotional re
ligion dedicated to the god Śiva. Taking a close look at translated works
of Harihara\, an exceptionally prolific and innovative writer from this
period\, we shall examine different kinds of devotional poetry he produce
d and trace how literature can pivot toward new themes\, new poetical for
ms\, and new audiences.\n\nJoin us also for a lighting ceremony\, Indian
food and\n\ncultural program in celebration of Diwali 2026.\n\nhttp://nex
