SUMMARY:MSE Seminar - Delower Hossain
LOCATION:Institute for Advanced Materials & Manufacturing 147\, 2641 Ospre
 y Vista Way\, Knoxville\, TN 37996
DESCRIPTION:High Entropy Ceramics\n\nAbstract: High-entropy ceramics (HECs
) have emerged as a promising class of materials for extreme environment
applications owing to their exceptional thermal stability\, mechanical pr
operties\, and compositional versatility. However\, the fundamental relat
ionships among chemical complexity\, thermodynamic stability\, electronic
structure\, and mechanical response remain poorly understood\, limiting
the predictive design of these materials. In this talk\, I will present a
n integrated computational and experimental approach to establish fundame
ntal design principles for refractory high-entropy carbides and diborides
\, with particular emphasis on the roles of configurational entropy\, def
ect landscapes\, and bonding in governing phase stability and mechanical
properties.\n\nSpeaker Bio: Dr. Delower Hossain is an Assistant Professor
in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) department at the Univ
ersity of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI). He completed his PhD in Mater
ials Science and Engineering in 2021 from Penn State University (PSU). Af
ter graduation\, Dr. Hossain worked as a postdoctoral research associate
at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and later as a staff
materials scientist at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL).
At UTSI\, his research group utilizes physical vapor deposition (PVD) pro
cesses to develop functional ceramics for extreme engineering application
