SUMMARY:Cristopher Niell - Neural circuits for natural vision

DESCRIPTION:Join the speaker for coffee\, cookies\, and conversation befor
e the talk\, starting at 11:45am.\n\nNeural circuits for natural vision A
bstract\n\nNatural visual processing entails a complex interplay between
sensory input\, behavioral context\, and on-going brain dynamics. Our lab
seeks to understand how these processes give rise to goal-directed visua
l behaviors\, by exploring the neural circuits mediating ethologically re
levant behaviors that laboratory mice perform\, including prey capture an
d distance estimation. We are also implementing novel experimental approa
ches to investigate neural coding of the visual scene as animals freely m
ove through their environment. Finally\, I will present a new research di
rection studying the completely different\, yet largely unexplored\, visu
al system of the octopus. In this work\, we are elucidating both the funct
ional and cell type organization to identify both shared and novel aspect
 s of visual computation.\n\nCristopher NiellUniversity of Oregon\n\nCrist
opher Niell received his B.S. in physics at Stanford University\, doing r
esearch in single-molecule biophysics with Dr. Steven Chu. He then remain
ed at Stanford to obtain his PhD with Dr. Stephen Smith\, studying the de
velopment and function of the zebrafish visual system. He then moved to U
CSF to perform post-doctoral study with Dr. Michael Stryker\, where he in
itiated studies of visual processing and behavioral state in the mouse co
rtex. He established his lab at University of Oregon in 2011\, where he i
