  Science Institute Fall Lecture
LOCATION:Marine Science Institute Auditorium
DESCRIPTION:UCSB Marine Science Institute presents:\nWhat’s Down There? Ex
ploring the Ocean’s Deep Interior with Dr. Bruce Robison\n\nJoin us in co
nversation with Dr. Bruce Robison\, Senior Scientist at the Monterey Bay
Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) – with remarks by Dr. Rebecca Vega Th
urber – to explore the biology and ecology of the animals inhabiting the
ocean’s deep water column. Bruce pioneered the use of undersea vehicles f
or these studies and led the first team of scientists trained as research
submersible pilots. Robison has spent a good portion of his career in de
ep water\, aboard more than a dozen different submersibles. At MBARI\, hi
s research team has focused on the\ndevelopment of remotely operated vehi
cles as research platforms for deep-sea research.\n\nDr. Bruce Robison re
ceived his PhD from Stanford University\, after an M.A. from the College
of William & Mary\, and a B.S. from Purdue University. He spent two years
conducting postdoctoral research at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institu
tion before returning home to California and to UC Santa Barbara. In 1987
\, he was one of the first scientists to join the fledgling MBARI. He is
the author of more than 150 scientific publications on a wide range of or
