SUMMARY:Gaucho Spirit: Stories of UCSB Athletics & Community
LOCATION:UCSB Library Special Research Collections
DESCRIPTION:On a Tuesday morning in September 1934\, Coach “Spud” Harder s
tood before the student body to announce a “New Deal” for athletics\, ral
lying the campus around the bold new emblem: “El Gaucho.” To spread the w
ord\, he introduced a football schedule tire cover similar to the one dis
played in this exhibition to publicize Santa Barbara State College across
the region.\n\nWhile 1934 marked the birth of the Gaucho identity\, the
university’s athletic tradition began in 1921 with the Roadrunners. Despi
te initial struggles on the field\, those early teams enjoyed fierce\, pa
ssionate support from the campus community. Over the century that followe
d\, that shared pride has only deepened.\n\nThe Gaucho spirit has been su
stained by generations of devoted students\, staff\, and local fans\, inc
luding legendary superfan Phil Womble. It reached an ecstatic peak in 200
6 when the Men’s Soccer team clinched the NCAA Championship\, prompting e
uphoric fans to carry the Harder Stadium goalposts all the way to the Pac
ific Ocean.\n\nFrom the historic 2004 Women’s Basketball Sweet Sixteen ru
n to the stellar individual careers of athletes like all-time leading sco
rer Orlando Johnson\, UCSB sports have always been about more than points
on a scoreboard. Today\, UCSB Athletics remains deeply embedded in the l
ocal community through vital youth outreach\, such as the softball progra
m's partnership with the Goleta Valley Girls Softball Association.\n\nCol
lectively\, every team\, fan\, and era helps foster an enduring Gaucho sp
 iri\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/2f897afc-ed09-4a87-9ad9-0f733fa1d58e
