SUMMARY:Colloquium on the Brain and Cognition with Julijana Gjorgjieva
LOCATION:Building 46 Singleton Auditorium (46-3002)\, 43 VASSAR ST\, Cambr
 idge\, MA 02139
DESCRIPTION:Time: 4:00pm\nLocation: 46-3002\, Singleton Auditorium (Third
floor of MIT Building 46)\n\nTalk Title: How neural circuits acquire stru
cture and use it flexibly\n\nAbstract: Neural circuits acquire structured
connectivity during development and learning\, yet must use this organiz
ation flexibly as sensory inputs\, context and behavioral demands change.
Understanding how these properties emerge is challenging because multipl
e plasticity mechanisms\, cell types and synaptic dynamics interact acros
s spatial and temporal scales. I combine theoretical analysis and mechani
stic modeling with quantitative analysis of large-scale physiological and
connectomic data to develop predictive frameworks that link synaptic pla
sticity\, circuit structure and function across these scales. I will firs
t discuss how patterned activity and plasticity generate structured organ
ization from dendritic inputs to recurrent circuits. I will then show how
inhibitory cell types and short-term synaptic dynamics shape circuit ope
rating regimes and responses to contextual signals. Finally\, I will disc
uss how the organization of synaptic inputs on individual dendritic branc
hes gives rise to dendritic nonlinearities that enable flexible learning
without interference between stored representations. Together\, these res
ults show how local biological mechanisms give rise to circuit-level comp
utation and motivate the broader goal of understanding how neural circuit
s are built\, modified by experience and used flexibly to guide \n\nhttp:
