SUMMARY:Huntington Research Conference: This Land Is...
LOCATION:Huntington Rothenberg Hall\, 1151 Oxford Rd\, San Marino\, CA 911
 08
DESCRIPTION:"This Land Is...: Common and Contested Ground in American Hist
ory and Culture" examines the multilayered histories of American land in
dialogue with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. T
he range of panels will cover topics such as reframing the revolution\, r
econstruction amendments and the civil war\, as well as mapping and unmap
ping borders. This 2-day conference deepens many of the stories in the ex
hibition “This Land Is …” and the companion volume of the larger Huntingt
on initiative. In dialogue with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration
of Independence\, the institution has been exploring the many-layered his
tories of land in what is now the United States. A series of panels will
unearth and examine some of those layers from different disciplinary pers
pectives and bring academic research into conversation with creative and
community practices. The program concludes with a multi-vocal “hootenanny
” of spoken word and song\, bringing together music from the exhibition w
ith contributors to the book This Land Is ...: Field Notes on American Gr
ound.\n\nFunding provided by The William French Smith Endowment\, The USC
Huntington Institute for California and the West\, and The USC Huntingto
 n Early Modern Studies Institute.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/31a2b958
