DESCRIPTION:Title: A probabilistic algorithm for air-sea momentum and heat
fluxes\n\nSpeaker: Dr. Jiarong Wu\, New York University\n\nAbstract: Acc
urately quantifying air-sea fluxes is important for understanding air-sea
interactions and improving coupled weather and climate systems. I will t
alk about our recent work (Wu et al. 2026 GRL) that develops a probabilis
tic algorithm for air-sea momentum and heat fluxes\, trained on in-situ e
ddy-covariance measurements using neural networks. Unlike deterministic b
ulk algorithms\, the probabilistic framework explicitly captures the high
variability inherent in air-sea fluxes\, and enables stochastic paramete
rizations by sampling from the predicted distributions. We demonstrate th
e application in a single column model of the upper ocean as well as in a
comprehensive climate model.\n\nAnother gap in current flux modeling is
the treatment of ocean waves (sea state)\, which are costly to simulate i
n online coupled atmosphere-ocean models. If time permits\, I will briefl
y discuss ongoing work that addresses this using a diffusion model to pro
vide efficient sea state sampling capabilities.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/e
