SUMMARY:EMSI LA2026 "American Landmarks: The Walking Purchase of 1737"
DESCRIPTION:The American Landmarks series explores historical touchstones
in The Huntington’s collections\, including objects featured in the “This
Land Is…” exhibition\, through a mix of panel discussions and community
conversations. Join scholars\, storytellers\, and community experts to ex
cavate the layered histories of this country through these cultural landm
arks and discuss the lessons they hold for the present.\n\nLA2026 is pres
ented by the USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute. It brings tog
ether members of the public and humanities scholars for eighteen conversa
tions about museum and cultural exhibitions at six partnering institution

West\, The Huntington\, LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes / El El Pueblo de Los
Angeles Historical Monument\, Mission San Gabriel Arcángel\, the Natural
History Museum of Los Angeles County\, and USC Libraries. Each exhibitio
n frames conversations about the anniversary of 1776 from the perspective
of California and the West. Each discussion will focus on specific items
from one of the partner exhibitions\, encouraging public discussions abo
ut national identities\, relationships between regional and national narr
atives\, participating in democracy\, and human relationships to the land
.\n\nThe EMSI LA2026 Project has been made possible in part by a major gr
