 venue\, Chapel Hill\, NC
DESCRIPTION:Reception and artist conversation: October 29\, 2026\, 5:00 pm
\n\nWeight of Light is an exhibition of seven works by multidisciplinary
artist taylor barnes\, created during her year-long residency at West Orc
hid in Pine Lake\, Georgia. Weight of Light considers the relationship be
tween material\, perception\, and the ongoing process of becoming. Emergi
ng from a period of experimentation and personal reflection\, the works o
ccupy an ambiguous space between painting and object. Neither fixed repre
sentations nor resolved compositions\, the works function as thresholds—s
ites of transition where questions of origin\, transformation\, and self-
possession remain open.\n\nbarnes approaches the canvas as a material str
ucture rather than a passive surface. Through staining\, layering\, satur
ation\, and the transformation of matter between solid and liquid states\
, she explores the physical and conceptual possibilities of charcoal. Mat
erials shift\, settle\, resist\, and respond\, creating conditions in whi
ch chance\, absence\, and emergence become integral to the work. The work
s do not seek resolution through conventional notions of completion. Inst
ead\, they retain evidence of their making—gestures\, interruptions\, acc
umulations\, and erasures that reveal the instability and possibility inh
erent in transformation. What remains visible is a record of decisions\,
encounters\, and material negotiations. The works resist linear narrative
 s of progress\, suggesting instead a cyclical understanding of origin\, m
 ovement\, a\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/3706ab26-8e4b-4819-8ded-49a073
