SUMMARY:Ezra Systems Seminar: Alexandra Werth (Cornell BME)
LOCATION:Upson Hall 216
DESCRIPTION:Making Learning Visible: Reflection\, GenAI\, and Measurement
 in Authentic Learning Environments\n\nAuthentic learning environments\, s
uch as capstone design or undergraduate research experiences\, give engin
eering students opportunities to practice being an engineer. These enviro
nments ask students to navigate uncertainty\, exercise judgment\, and lea
rn through collaboration. Yet measuring this learning is challenging\, pa
rticularly across engineering’s diverse educational contexts. Students’ w
ritten reflections offer both a way to support learning and a window into
how they make sense of their experiences. How can we use these rich\, tr
aditionally qualitative accounts to investigate patterns in learning acro
ss students and settings?\n\nOur research addresses four connected challe
nges: eliciting substantive reflection\, establishing what students’ acco
unts can tell us about the learning we value\, interpreting those account
s reliably\, and producing findings that can inform educational practice.
This seminar focuses on developing methods and tools that elicit deeper
student reflection and support reliable analysis\, drawing on both pedago
gical design and new capabilities of generative AI.\n\nI will share work
exploring AI-personalized short-form reflections and longer reflective me
mos\, alongside human and AI-assisted approaches to analyzing students’ w
riting. These examples bring questions of validation\, interrater reliabi
lity\, and the role of course context into focus. Together\, they contrib
