SUMMARY:Haddin Arts & Sciences Forum: “Punishment\, Fun-ishment\, and Reje
 cting Retributivism”
LOCATION:Mervyn Sterne Library 163\, 917 13th Street South\, Birmingham\,
 AL 35294
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Matt King\, Ph.D.\, professor in the Department of
 Philosophy\n\nTopic: “Punishment\, Fun-ishment\, and Rejecting Retributiv
ism”\n\nRetributivism – the idea that wrongdoers deserve punishment – is
widely accepted and\, to\nmany\, deeply obvious. Only the guilty should b
e punished\, and only to the degree of their\nblameworthiness. In this ta
lk\, I challenge retributivism by showing that nothing about a\nperson’s
desert of punishment follows from being blameworthy.\nIn particular\, I a
rgue that blame is not a form of harm treatment\, so while the blameworth
y\ndeserve blame\, it doesn’t follow that they deserve hard treatment. Mo
reover\, appreciating\nwhy blame is not a form of hard treatment reveals
a broader implication: how we ought to\ntreat the blameworthy is not dete
rmined by their blameworthiness at all. It is an entirely\nseparate subst
antive question. This means that basic retributivism – that deserved\npun
ishment tracks blameworthiness – will require independent argument.\n\nLu
nch will be served. Please RSVP here by Monday\, Nov. 9\, to help us plan
for the correct number of meals.\n\nQuestions? Email haddinforum@uab.edu
.\n\nThe Haddin Arts & Sciences Forum offers scholarship that is interdis
ciplinary and translatable to a broad audience\, celebrating and elevatin
g the intellectual vibrancy present in the academic atmosphere of the Col
 lege of Arts and Sciences.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/3a07c2f4-d8eb-4
