SUMMARY:Shaping a Library | Exhibition
LOCATION:Geisel Library Exhibition Gallery\, 9701 Hopkins Drive\, La Jolla
 \, CA 92093
DESCRIPTION:In early 1970\, a San Diego newspaper announced\, “Unique Libr
ary Taking Shape.” The headline referred to UC San Diego’s Central Univer
sity Library\, now Geisel Library\, which was then under construction.\n\
nThe Library’s story began several years earlier. In 1965\, architect Wil
liam L. Pereira was invited to design the Central University Library\, en
visioned as the flagship building for the UC San Diego campus. Constructi
on began in 1968\, and by September 1971\, the new Central University Lib
rary was dedicated. Over the decades\, the building has continued to evol
ve through expansions and renovations\, adapting to the changing needs of
the campus community.\n\nTracing the history of the Library’s site desig
 n process\, construction and expansion from 1965 to 1993\, Shaping a Libr
ary draws on unique materials from UC San Diego Library’s Special Collect
ions & Archives. From Pereira’s original spherical concept for Geisel Lib
rary to Gunnar Birkerts’ glass-walled expansion\, architectural drawings\
, photographs and documents reveal the ideas\, people and processes that
shaped this beloved campus landmark.\n\nShaping a Library is on view in t
he Exhibition Gallery on the 2nd (main) Floor of Geisel Library during th
 e building's open hours from Saturday\, September 26 through Tuesday\, De
cember 8\, 2026.\n\nCan’t make it to campus to view the exhibition in-per
son? View the digital exhibit.\n\nImage Credit: Architectural rendering o
