SUMMARY:Do the Ends Justify the Means?
LOCATION:Chapman 201
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, November 17 at 5:30pm in Chapman 201 for
this consequentialism vs. deontology showdown!\n\nTwo philosophers — Dani
el Muñoz (ANU) and Harry Lloyd (UNC-Chapel Hill) — will spend an evening
arguing about how to tell right from wrong. Consequentialists say that th
e right thing to do is whatever leads to the best consequences. But deont
ologists say that there are things we must do or refrain from doing in sp
ite of the consequences. Come and decide for yourself. No prior backgroun
d in philosophy or ethics required! Stick around after the talk for light
refreshments and conversation.\n\nThis event is free and open to the pub
lic.\n\nThis forum is presented by the Parr Center for Ethics and the Phi
 losophy\, Politics\, and Economics (PPE) Program at UNC-Chapel Hill.\n\nD
aniel Muñoz is a moral philosopher who loves politics\, economics\, and f
ormal techniques. In 2019\, he received his PhD from MIT. After two years
at Monash University\, he was a Core PPE Faculty Member in the Philosoph
y Department until 2026 at UNC Chapel Hill\, stepping down as Associate P
rofessor to take a job as Senior Lecturer at the Australian National Univ
ersity.\n\nDaniel’s first book was Ethical Theory (Routledge\, 2024) with
Sarah Stroud. Next up is What We Owe to Ourselves (OUP)\, which argues f
or a “self–other symmetric” theory of rights.\n\nIn addition to his acade
mic writing\, he posts weekly at Big iff True\, and serves as Book Review
Editor at Ethics alongside Daniel Wodak.\n\n***\n\nHarry Lloyd‘s academi
