SUMMARY:Navigating Sociotechnical Disruptions in Software Engineering
LOCATION:Sennott Square 5317\, 210 South Bouquet Street\, Pittsburgh\, PA
 15260
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Software development is shaped by constant disruptio
n—from open-source dependency abandonment to generative AI (GenAI) tools
fundamentally reshaping how code is written.\n\nIn this talk\, I'll prese
nt two lines of work\, each examining a different disruption. First\, I'l
l share my work on the disruption of open source dependency abandonment\,
revealing the unsupported challenges developers face when identifying an
d responding to abandonment\, identifying factors that support successful
downstream response\, and demonstrating how theory-driven LLM-based syst
ems can make those risks more visible. Second\, I'll present findings fro
m my recent collaboration with Microsoft Research about the disruption of
GenAI adoption on development teams\, demonstrating why adoption succeed
s for some developers but stalls for others in seemingly similar contexts
\, showing the amplification effect organizational support mechanisms can
have\, and introducing the Productivity Pressure Paradox: a dynamic wher
e increased productivity expectations without corresponding support can a
ctually prevent developers from building the skills that would deliver th
ose gains.\n\nFinally\, I'll outline my research vision for helping devel
opers anticipate and navigate the disruptions of tomorrow—from building A
I-powered tools for software supply chain resilience to studying how GenA
I is reshaping development team practices and processes.\n\nBio: Courtney
Miller is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at George Wash\n\nh
