SUMMARY:Lunch Club Series | Beneath Tiahuanacu’s Streets: Ceramic iconogra
phy and Ancient Heritage in an Aymara town
LOCATION:Building 500\, Archaeology Center 106\, 488 Escondido Mall\, Stan
 ford\, CA 94305
DESCRIPTION:Lunch Club provides affiliates of the Stanford Archaeology Cen
ter with a community-oriented forum for engagement with current issues in
archaeology. On Nov 11\, 2026\, we will host Dr.Paul Goldstein from Univ
ersity of California\, San Diego.\n\nAbstract:\n\nResearch on Tiwanaku ce
ramic iconography\, including eclipse imagery and a little-known system o
f post-firing engravings\, brought me to Tiahuanacu in 2026. Though long
rumored to overlie an extension of the Tiwanaku UNESCO World Heritage sit
e\, the town was never systematically investigated until a 2024-25 salvag
e project for a new municipal sewer system. Directed by Tiahuanacu archae
ologists\, the project yielded significant finds that substantially add t
o and complement the Tiwanaku site museum’s collections. With funding fro
m U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP)\, our project “S
hared Heritage at Tiwanaku”\, directed by Deborah Blom\, Luis Callisaya a
nd Hugo Avalos\, will work with Tiahuanacu archaeologists\, excavation “m
aestros”\, educators\, tour guides\, and local authorities to study the n
ew finds and build inclusive educational materials and a new Municipal Ga
 llery exhibit.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/4a034e39-4002-4308-b48a-519
