SUMMARY:Exhibition—“Melvin Hollins: The Observer”
LOCATION:Idilko Butler Gallery\, Lowenstein Center and Susan Lipani Galler
 y\, Lowenstein Center\, Lincoln Center Campus\, 113 W 60th St.\, New York
 \, NY 10023
DESCRIPTION:Melvin Hollins was an African-American armed forces veteran\,
a Fordham University Lincoln Center Ram\, and a gifted street photographe
r who compassionately recorded the social fabric of New York City through
out the 1970s. This exhibition presents 18 framed archival prints made fr
om scanned black and white negatives in the Ildiko Butler Gallery\, and 1
33 5″ x 8″ pages from the book Melvin Hollins: The Observer\, which encir
cle the entire Susan Lipani Gallery in the Visual Arts Complex.\n\nThe im
ages span the geography of New York City and the diverse cultures that ca
ll it home. Hollins’ photographs range from direct portraits to candid im
pressions made from afar\, and to images that record the quotidian detail
 s of everyday life in New York—buildings\, streets\, parades\, contests\,
marches\, playgrounds\, and beyond. Regardless of what Melvin Hollins po
inted his camera at\, his photographs are marked by attentiveness to form
and suffused with empathy and kindness. In particular\, his images of ch
ildren are extraordinary for the complexity and range of emotions they de
pict.\n\nThe title of the exhibition and accompanying book is both a desc
ription of Melvin’s photographic practice and a nod to our outstanding st
udent newspaper\, The Observer\, whose photographs demonstrate extraordin
ary documentary reportage\, as did Melvin’s.\n\nLastly\, but significantl
y\, the color theme for this exhibition is based on the 1970s New York li
cense plate and subway signage.\n\nCurator Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock wor
