DESCRIPTION:CSI’s Inequality Discussion Groups bring together Cornell facu
lty and graduate students from around campus to discuss and improve their
in-progress research.\n\nTitle: From Neighborhoods to Buildings: Buildin
 g Stratification and Immigrant–Native Residential Inequality\n\nAbstract:
Residential segregation research has predominantly focused on neighborho
ods\, leaving residential differentiation across and within buildings com
paratively understudied. As neighborhoods become increasingly heterogeneo
us through processes such as gentrification and demographic diversificati
on\, neighborhood-level measures may obscure substantial inequalities emb
edded in the buildings where people live. This study introduces the conce
pt of building stratification to capture two interrelated dimensions of r
esidential inequality: sorting across building types and individual build
ings\, and differences among residents sharing the same building. Using r
estricted Japanese census microdata\, I develop a novel spatial matching
approach to identify individuals residing in the same residential buildin
g\, providing rare population-scale evidence at a spatial resolution typi
cally unavailable in contemporary population data. The results reveal sub
stantial immigrant–native residential inequalities across multiple spatia
l scales. Immigrants reside in less advantaged neighborhoods and building
s\, with building-level disparities persisting even within the same neigh
borhoods and building types. Yet\, immigrants exhibit higher l\n\nhttp://
