SUMMARY:ECE Seminar Series - John K. Delaney
LOCATION:Gore Hall 103\, Gore Hall\, University of Delaware\, Newark\, DE

DESCRIPTION:Multimodal Imaging Spectroscopy in Cultural Heritage Science\n
 \nJohn K. Delaney\, Kate A. Dooley and Amar Risbud\nNational Gallery of A
 rt\, Washington\, DC\, USA\n\nVarious imaging spectroscopy techniques hav
e proven valuable for addressing questions in cultural heritage. These me
thods help identify the materials used in old master paintings and provid
e insights into artists’ working methods. Most research has focused on vi
sible and near-infrared reflectance imaging spectroscopy (400 to 2500 nm)
and X-ray fluorescence imaging spectroscopy. Only recently have research
ers started collecting image cubes in the mid-infrared range (2.5 to 16 m
m)\, which offers access to rich molecular information in this part of th
e electromagnetic spectrum. The development of semi-automated processing
algorithms tailored for image cubes from cultural heritage objects is now
increasingly important. This talk will highlight successful applications
and ongoing challenges\, particularly in analyzing datasets from old mas
 ter paintings.\n\nShort Bio: John K. Delaney\, PhD\, is a senior scientis
t in the scientific research department at the National Gallery of Art\,
where he manages the Chemical Imaging Laboratory. His research involves d
eveloping multimodal imaging spectroscopic methods to address conservatio
n and art-historical questions. Before joining the National Gallery\, he
was Chief Scientist and Manager of the Systems Engineering Department at
the Advanced Sensor Business Unit of Goodrich SRS. He is an associat\n\nh
