SUMMARY:Sternean Entanglements: Laurence Sterne and Early Soviet Culture
LOCATION:Verna and Peter Dauterive Hall (VPD) 106\, 635 Downey Way\, Los A
 ngeles\, CA 90089
DESCRIPTION:Laurence Sterne\, the author of Tristram Shandy (1759-61) and
A Sentimental Journey (1768)\, was an unlikely object of sustained intere
st in Soviet Russia. Nevertheless\, his writings found avid readers and a
dmirers throughout the 1920s and 1930s\, across a period of profound chan
ges in literary institutions and intellectual life. Sterne could be claim
ed in the 1920s as an experimental writer and “revolutionary of form”\; b
y the 1930s\, when such claims had become increasingly difficult to susta
in\, interest in his work intensified rather than disappeared\, while the
terms on which he was read changed. This lecture follows the histories o
f particular books and readers\, moving between well-known intellectuals
and figures largely absent from literary history. Sterne’s Soviet afterli
ves offer a way of considering reading as a practice of self-fashioning a
nd of asking how such practices contributed to forms of intellectual auto
nomy after the Revolution.\n\nThis event is sponsored by the Department o
f Slavic Languages and Literatures and the Levan Institute for the Humani
 ties.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/56a920b2-fbf7-4840-9f44-97e64b01241d
