SUMMARY:Lunchtime Curator Talk | California Current: Art and Histories fro
 m the Bay Area
LOCATION:Cantor Arts Center Freidenrich Family Gallery (221)\, 328 Lomita
 Drive\, Stanford\, CA 94305
DESCRIPTION:Join Aleesa Pitchamarn Alexander\, the Robert M. and Ruth L. H
alperin Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art\, on this specia
l tour of California Current: Art and Histories from the Bay Area.\n\nRSV
 P here.\n\nHow does a community stay rooted in a region that’s constantly
changing? California Current invites you to consider this question and o
thers through its more than 60 works — many on view for the first time —
that explore the interplay between Bay Area history\, art\, and artists o
ver the past century.\n\nTitled after the major cold-water current that r
uns the length of the West Coast of North America\, California Current br
 ings together paintings\, sculptures\, works on paper\, photographs\, and
time-based media by Bay Area artists from the twentieth century to the p
resent. The exhibition traces a series of interconnected currents — ecolo
 gical\, infrastructural\, technological\, personal\, creative\, and polit
ical — that have shaped both artistic production and everyday life in Nor
thern California.\n\nArranged thematically across time and media\, Califo
rnia Current places historical works in conversation with contemporary on
es\, emphasizing both continuity and change. Together\, they ask: What ha
s drawn so many people to this region? What has allowed communities and c
reative practices to take root here? And what continues to keep so many o
 f us — despite the Bay Area’s contradictions\, pressures\, and constant r
einvention — deeply connected to this place? Presented as part of the Fur
