SUMMARY:Chemical approaches to regenerative organ repair
LOCATION:Sterling Chemistry Laboratory SCL 160\, 225 Prospect Street\, New
  Haven\, CT 06511
DESCRIPTION:Please join Yale Chemistry for a Silliman Seminar in organic c
hemistry with Prof. Michael Bollong\, Associate Professor\, Department of
Chemistry\, Early Career Endowed Roon Chair for Cardiovascular Research
at Scripps Research.\n\nAbstract: Despite perceived organismal complexity
\, mammals possess relatively poor regenerative potential compared to cer
tain lesser species of Animalia (e.g.\, amphibians). Indeed\, there are m
any human disease states where an insufficient regenerative response limi
ts organ repair and is determining of disease etiology (e.g.\, heart fail
ure\, T1D\, IPF). To overcome these limitations\, we have ongoing program
s aimed at identifying novel small molecules\, drug targets\, and repurpo
sed drugs which control the context-specific cell growth and differentiat
ion pathways limiting regenerative potential in a given tissue or cell ty
pe. Here\, I will overview our academic drug development programs aimed a
t regenerating several mammalian organ systems\, including the heart and
lungs.\n\nBio: Michael J. Bollong\, Ph.D.\, earned his BS in biochemistry
and cell biology from University of California\, San Diego (2009) and hi
s PhD in chemistry from Scripps Research (2016) under the mentorship of P
ete Schultz. He was the inaugural Scripps Fellow (2017)\, an early indepe
ndence principal investigator position. In 2020\, he became an Assistant
Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Scripps Research and is curre
ntly the Early Career Endowed Roon Chair for Cardiovascular Research as a
