 nternational University\nUniversity Graduate School\n\nDoctoral Dissertat
ion Defense\n\nAbstract\nProbing the Proteome: Depressive Symptoms\, Infl
ammation & Mitochondrial Perturbations in Acute HIV Infection\n\nby\nJenn
ifer Vanessa Chavez\n\nThere is ample evidence that HIV-associated pathop
hysiologic alterations fuel neuropsychiatric comorbidities.\nDuring acute
HIV infection (AHI) damage to the gut-associated lymphoid tissue causes
translocation of microbial\nproducts\, including lipopolysaccharides\, an
d drives gut-immune dysfunction. Even though antiretroviral therapy (ART)
\nsuppresses viral replication\, it fails to completely restore gut barri
er integrity and normalize plasma immune markers\,\ndriving chronic immun
e activation and inflammation. This proinflammatory state is made worse b
y a marked reduction in\nantioxidants and upregulation of ROS and/or reac
tive nitrogen species\, affecting mitochondrial function. Additionally\,\
nsubstance use also increases HIV pathogenesis in the central nervous sys
tem (CNS) despite ART.\nProteomics\, the evaluation of the function and s
tructure of proteins to understand an organism’s nature\, has been\nlever
aged to examine HIV-associated outcomes across the lifespan. However\, mu
ch of the existing literature has focused\non individuals with chronic\,
treated HIV infection\, making it challenging to disentangle the biologic
al processes initiated\nby HIV itself from the compounded effects of chro
 nic infection\,\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/6f9114c0-060f-4383-b1a5-97
