SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium: Paul Stevenson\, Northeastern University
LOCATION:Higgins Hall 310
DESCRIPTION:Small fields\, big challenges: spectroscopy\n\nand imaging wit
h NV centers\n\nNitrogen Vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are now a workho
rse platform for solid-state quantum sensing. As the technology matures\,
attention is shifting from proof-of-concept demonstrations toward practi
cal measurements where sensitivity\, spatial resolution\, and sensor inte
gration are paramount. In many of these applications - from nanoscale ima
ging to molecular spectroscopy - the relevant signals are surprisingly we
ak\, often at the edge of what current NV sensors can detect. Understandi
ng the fundamental limits and developing strategies to work at these limi
ts is essential for expanding the reach of NV-based sensing.\n\nIn this t
alk\, I will discuss recent progress from our lab in working at the limit
s of NV-based detection across two fronts. First\, I will present our wor
k on imaging nanoscale magnetic textures in multiferroic materials\, wher
e the sub-diffraction resolution of NV centers reveals new topological fe
atures. Second\, I will discuss the diverse magnetic signals present in b
iological systems and show how we can probe the probe the spin configurat
ion in metalloproteins. These challenges drive new approaches to measurem
ent and analysis that will be essential as NV centers and other quantum d
efects move toward more demanding applications.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/e
