SUMMARY:Mathematics Junior Colloquium
LOCATION:Ayres Hall 405
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Alex kafkas\n\nTitle: The Same Idea\, Everywhere: An
Invitation to Category Theory\n\nAbstract: What do the greatest common di
visor of two numbers\, the Cartesian product of two sets\, and the logica
l conjunction “and” have in common? More than you might think. In this ta
lk we will see that all three come from a single definition\, one that ne
ver mentions numbers\, ordered pairs\, or truth values\, and only describ
es how other things map in. This is the basic idea of category theory: un
derstand an object by how it relates to everything else. Along the way we
will turn gcd into lcm by reversing arrows\, see the chain rule from cal
culus in a new light\, and make precise why some isomorphisms feel “natur
al” while others do not. No background beyond calculus and some linear al
 gebra is needed.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/7361174d-7f58-4ab3-a96d-0
