SUMMARY:Mathematical Biology Seminar - Will Magrogan
LOCATION:Engineering Center ECCR 257\, 1111 Engineering Drive\, Boulder\,
 CO 80309
DESCRIPTION:Will Magrogan\, Department of Applied Mathematics\, University
of Colorado Boulder\n\nOpinion and Culture Evolution in Higher Dimension
s\n\nVoter models were first proposed in 1975 by Holley and Ligget as a f
ramework for understanding how consensus is reached in a network of inter
acting single-opinion voters. The model can be extended to allow opinions
on multiple issues and addition nuace in opinions. More nuanced opinions
allows correlations in interactions between them and in how opinion upda
te. A tractable implementation of these rules\, similar to the Axelrod mo
del of cultural diffusion (introduced in 1997) parameterizes these update
rules as update probabilities. In this way\, we will examine the dynamic
s and asymptotics of a two dimensional binary opinion space and anazlye t
he system kinetics as it evolves towards either polarization\, or consens
us. These results offer insight into different regimes of opinion formati
on and tools to analyze real-world voter data.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/ev
