SUMMARY:Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Graduate Seminar: Extreme Aer
 odynamics: Beyond the Envelope
LOCATION:Hall of Languages 207\, 101 Crouse Dr\, Syracuse\, NY 13210
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Kunihiko (Sam) Taira\, Professor at University of
California\, Los Angeles\n\nTitle: Extreme Aerodynamics: Beyond the Enve
lope\n\nAbstract Summary:\n\nThis talk examines flight in extreme aerodyn
amic conditions—such as the turbulent wakes of urban canyons\, mountainou
s terrain\, and ships—that pose severe challenges for small-scale aircraf
t due to large gust disturbances occurring on timescales comparable to fl
ow instabilities. Using computational and physics-embedded machine learni
ng methods\, Dr. Taira’s group has found that these extreme flows are sur
prisingly low-dimensional with similarities across a wide range of Reynol
ds numbers\, enabling the development of fast-acting flow control and opt
imal wing designs to suppress transient loads.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/ev
