DESCRIPTION:The Oregon Humanities Center hosts weekly Work-in-Progress Tal
ks to showcase the humanities research of its many fellows. This week\, M
icah Jones presents her research on "The Price of Freedom: Race\, Consump
tion\, and the Long Black Freedom Struggle\, 1915-1970."\n\nJones's proje
ct is a history of consumerism and civil rights activism in the Jim Crow
South. She documents the discrimination Black shoppers faced in white-own
ed stores\, and how they protested these practices. She also tracks how b
roader changes in the retail industry impacted Black consumers\, in parti
cular. For Black southerners\, securing their civil rights was not enough
. True freedom necessitated full and equal access to all realms of public
life\, from the polls to the produce aisle.\n\nJoin us for this Work-in-
Progress Talk in the OHC Conference Room (Prince Lucien Campbell Hall 159
) at noon on Fridays. These events are free and open to the public. Pleas
e register for this event online at ohc.uoregon.edu.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.
