SUMMARY:Department of Physics Colloquium\, Professor Kyle Leach\, Queens U
 niversity
LOCATION:Physical Sciences Building 120\, 245 East Avenue
DESCRIPTION:General Physics Colloquium\, Professor Kyle Leach\, Queens Uni
versity\n\nTitle: Probing Fundamental Physics with Radioactive Atoms and
Quantum Sensors\n\nHost: Brad Ramshaw\n\nAbstract: Precision measurements
of radioactive decay can reveal particles and interactions that are othe
rwise difficult to access. By embedding radioactive atoms directly into s
uperconducting sensors\, we can measure the tiny recoil energies left beh
ind when neutrinos or other "invisible" particles are emitted. I will des
cribe how this approach connects nuclear physics\, atomic physics\, mater
ials science\, quantum engineering\, and the study of fundamental interac
tions\, using the BeEST and SALER experiments as examples. The talk will
include searches for new neutrinos\, recent measurements that constrain t
he quantum localization of neutrino production\, and the opportunities cr
eated by bringing sensitive superconducting devices together with rare-is
otope beams. I will also discuss future directions that use levitated opt
omechanics and quantum optics to potentially provide coherent enhancement
 s to these processes.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/90aabcc9-195f-40ab-8
