SUMMARY:BioFrontiers Presents: "Disciplined Wonder: Of Fantastic Beasts an
 d Frugal Machines"
LOCATION:Jennie Smoly Caruthers Biotec Building Butcher Auditorium (A115)\
 , 3415 Colorado Avenue\, Boulder\, CO 80309
DESCRIPTION:BioFrontiers Presents is a free public talk series sponsored b
y the CU Boulder BioFrontiers Institute. Our mission is to engage with ou
r community through public talks for public good.\n\nAssociate Professor
Saad Bhamla will deliver the November talk:\n\nDisciplined Wonder: Of Fan
tastic Beasts and Frugal Machines. In this talk\, I will take you on a vo
yage of curiosity-driven discoveries\, from our backyards\, to the Tibeta
n grasslands\, to the Amazon Rainforest. I will describe how sheepdogs he
rd and 'control' a flock of sheep\, how worms braid\, tangle\, and knot i
nto living "blobs" that solve a historical "Gordian knot" problem\, how m
illimeter-scale ripple bugs deploy tiny folding fans to nimbly sprint\, b
rake\, and turn across turbulent streams\, and how flamingos use their he
ads and feet to stir vortices that trap prey. Across these stories\, I wi
ll highlight how nature's 'endless forms' solve beautiful problems in phy
 sics\, engineering\, and mathematics.\n\nThen\, I will share our frugal s
cience philosophy: building inventions that cost pennies but have the pot
ential to impact billions. A 20-cent paper centrifuge for malaria diagnos
 tics\, a dollar open-source hearing aid\, and a $1 vaccine delivery devic
e inspired by a BBQ lighter\, creating accessible tools that democratize
science education and global health.\n\nCome learn how curiosity about th
e natural world can inspire real solutions to human societal problems!\n\
nTalk + Q&A for the first hour\, then a free reception to facilitate info
