SUMMARY:A Conversation with Researchers: Tracking HIV Through Wastewater i
 n South Africa
LOCATION:Gunn Building (SIEPR) Doll 320 (third floor)\, 366 Galvez Street\
 , Stanford\, CA 94305
DESCRIPTION:Wastewater surveillance helped track COVID-19. Can it do the s
ame for HIV?\n\nThe King Center on Global Development welcomes four visit
ing researchers from the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC)\,
working on HIV wastewater surveillance in KwaZulu-Natal.\n\nA joint Stan
ford-SAMRC team is mapping HIV concentrations across northern KwaZulu-Nat
al to detect unrecognized transmission of HIV\, measure changes in drug r
esistance and in anti-retroviral drug residues over time\, enhance popula
tion surveillance\, and track the success of interventions\, offering a p
otentially cost-effective and relatively unbiased approach to public heal
th monitoring.\n\nJulie Parsonnet and Alexandra Boehm are co-Principal In
vestigators of the multiyear HIV Wastewater Epidemiology in South Africa
Initiative.\n\nJoin Parsonnet and the SAMRC team for conversation over lu
nch\, an opportunity to learn firsthand from African epidemiologists and
laboratory scientists about the realities of their work in the field\, an
d about infectious disease surveillance in vulnerable communities.\n\nAbo
ut the speakers:\n\nDr. Nomfundo Mahlangeni is a Senior Scientist at the
SAMRC\, where she leads the Water\, Sanitation and Society Research Progr
am within the Environment and Health Research Unit (EHRU). Her recent wor
k includes detection and quantification of pharmaceutical compounds\, inc
luding antiretroviral drugs\, in wastewater. She is also passionate about
research addressing the health and well-being of women and children in v
