DESCRIPTION:Title: Educators’ Beliefs and Interpretations of Productive Fa
ilure in STEM Professional Development\n\nProgram: Curriculum and Instruc
tion EdD\n\nCommittee Chair: Arturo Rodriguez\n\nCommittee: Arturo Rodrig
uez\, Daibao Guo\, Jennifer Snow\n\nAbstract: Productive failure (PF) is
an instructional approach that engages students in challenging problems b
efore receiving instruction. Research has examined its effects on student
learning\; however\, less attention has been given to how educators expe
rience and interpret PF themselves.\nThis qualitative case study explored
how participation in a four-day STEM professional development course rel
ated to educators' beliefs about teaching through struggle. The study inc
luded ten educators and used pre- and post-surveys\, daily written reflec
tions\, observational field notes\, and seven individual interviews.\nAna
lysis of the data resulted in four themes: (1) Failure became productive
when it provided information for continued learning\; (2) educators recon
sidered when and how to provide support\; (3) experiencing struggle revea
led its emotional complexity\; and (4) belief development followed differ
ent pathways. The study also identified a cross-cutting condition: PS was
not automatic.\nThe findings contribute to understanding how educators i
nterpret PF through their own learning experiences and offer insights for
designing PD that supports educators in facilitating PF in STEM learning
  environments.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/985a0f16-fb37-4619-bbff-44e
