SUMMARY:Southern Gothic: Literary Intersections with Art from The Johnson
 Collection
LOCATION:Shaw Center for the Arts LSU Museum of Art\, 5th floor\, 100 Lafa
 yette St\, Baton Rouge\, LA 70801
DESCRIPTION:on view October 1\, 2026–January 3\, 2027 at the LSU Museum of
Art\n\nThis fall the LSU Museum of Art presents Southern Gothic: Literar
y Intersections with Art from The Johnson Collection. Drawing from the ce
lebrated holdings of The Johnson Collection in Spartanburg\, South Caroli
na\, and Louisiana institutions and private collectors\, this exhibition
explores how visual artists have grappled with the American South’s layer
ed history through a lens long cultivated in Southern literature.\n\nOrig
inally curated as a collaboration between The Johnson Collection and Woff
ord College\, also in Spartanburg\, the show examines how nineteenth- and
twentieth-century artists employed potent visual language to transcribe
the tensions between the South’s idyllic aura and its historical realitie
 s. Using Southern Gothic literary traditions as inspiration\, the groupin
g considers how artists translate into visual form the same tensions foun
d in the writings of William Faulkner\, Flannery O'Connor\, Tennessee Wil
liams\, and Toni Morrison. Often described as a mood rather than a strict
genre\, Southern Gothic blends elements of horror\, romance\, decay\, sp
 irituality\, and dark humor. In painting\, printmaking\, and sculpture\,
these sensibilities emerge as evocative landscapes\, charged domestic int
eriors\, allegorical scenes\, stereotypical antebellum imagery\, and port
raits that hint at psychological depth and social complexity.\n\nThe core
group of artworks has been expanded to engage Louisiana’s distinctive cu
 ltural \n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/98ec6ead-7f6d-47e9-bc6d-4db93f9c18
