SUMMARY:KU Physics & Astronomy Public Talk: Astrophysics with the IceCube
and RICE telescopes at the South Pole: Probing the universe by detecting
 neutrinos filtered through the Earth.
LOCATION:Lawrence Public Library Auditorium\, 707 Vermont Street Lawrence\
 , KS 66044
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Francis Halzen
of Belgium\, who (in 1992) proposed a `neutrino telescope' at the South P
ole\, based on established technologies.\n\nFrancis was also instrumental
in facilitating the inception of the KU-based RICE experiment\, employin
 g a previously-untested technology.\n\nKU Professor Dave Besson will disc
uss the development of 'neutrino telescopes' in the polar icecaps over th
e last three decades\, based on 15 visits to the South Pole and five to S
ummit Station\, Greenland and future prospects.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/e
