SUMMARY:JILA Science Seminar: VF Trey Porto talk on : "Things you may not
 know about BEAM SPLITTERS"
LOCATION:JILA X317\, 1900 Colorado Avenue\, Boulder\, CO 80309
DESCRIPTION:Title:Things you may not know about BEAM SPLITTERS\n\nSpeaker:
  Trey Porto/JQI\, NIST\n\nEvent Details / Abstract:This presentation was
inspired by a paper I stumbled upon a few years ago\, titled "Programming
balanced optical beam splitters in white paint"\, which contained severa
l concepts I hadn't known\, and some interesting ideas that I think could
be extremely useful in numerous optical applications. The talk starts wi
th a review of simple beam splitters and the fundamental constraints that
lead to the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect. Then I will discuss the results of se
veral papers that developed programmable optical beam splitters in random
scattering environments and demonstrated their functionality. Along the
way I will note some counter-intuitive (at leas to me) observations about
the fundamental behavior of beam splitters.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/even
