SUMMARY:Volunteer with Serve UGA at Friends of Brooklyn Cemetery
LOCATION:Brooklyn Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Join Serve UGA this semester for volunteering opportunities wi
th Friends at Brooklyn Cemetery! Hidden in the woods behind Clarke Middle
School in Athens\, Georgia is a portal to another time. Concealed by vin
es and brambles\, Brooklyn Cemetery is an African American cemetery which
was used primarily from the 1880s to the 1990s. Those who were laid to r
est here mostly lived in the Brooklyn/Hawthorne area of Athens. Nature an
d time have laid claim to much of the cemetery\; some tombstones have fal
len and are covered with ivy\, other graves are completely unmarked.\n\nT
he purpose of this service project is to not only educate participants of
the historical significance of the cemetery but to also aid in the ongoi
ng beautification\, preservation\, and research of a once lost landmark o
f the African American community in Athens\, Georgia. Volunteers will wor
k to remove overgrowth\, fallen limbs\, and underbrush from the grave sit
es.\n\nWe volunteer on an ongoing basis at the cemetery. Once you sign-up
\, one of your site leaders will be in touch with you with more informati
on about what to expect.\n\nThe University of Georgia is committed to pro
viding access and reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities
upon request. Please contact the Department of Engagement\, Leadership\,
& Service via phone at 706-542-6396 or email at ugaels@uga.edu with speci
