SUMMARY:CWC Docs: Third Act
LOCATION:Pollock Theater\, 34.415051\,-119.848801
DESCRIPTION:Generations of artists call Robert A. Nakamura the “Godfather
of Asian American Media\,” but his son Tad calls him Dad. Drawing on the
lessons his father taught him\, Tad sets out to make the film that he “al
ways knew he had to make\,” charting his father’s legacy as a child survi
vor of the WWII Japanese American incarceration and a successful commerci
al photographer-turned-activist filmmaker. A co-founder of the Asian Amer
ican media organization Visual Communications\, Robert made some of the f
irst films to explore Asian American identity and memory from a personal
vantage point. Third Act (2025) intricately weaves together an array of a
rchival materials and interviews to reflect on his creative eye and decad
es of filmmaking as a form of resistance. As Parkinson’s disease begins t
o cloud Robert’s memory\, the film shifts focus into a deeply personal me
ditation on familial activism\, art\, grief\, and the enduring bonds of f
atherhood.\n\nFilmmaker Tadashi Nakamura will join moderator Alexander Ch
o (Asian American Studies\, UCSB) for a post-screening discussion of Thir
 d Act.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/events/a67ed5e0-393e-4812-86f4-c409fc98929
