SUMMARY:Guillermo Aguilar: Mechanical Engineering Distinguished Seminar Se
 ries
LOCATION:University Memorial Center (UMC) UMC 382–384–386 or Kittredge Mul
 tipurpose Rooms\, 1669 Euclid Avenue\, Boulder\, CO 80309
DESCRIPTION:Title\n\nLight\, Heat\, and Materials: Engineering Solutions f
or Biomedical Discovery and Therapeutic Innovation\n\nAbstract\n\nFor mor
e than two decades\, my research has explored how interactions among ligh
t\, heat and matter can address challenges in medicine and engineering\,
spanning laser-assisted cooling and heating for dermatological applicatio
 ns\, biomedical optics\, laser diagnostics\, laser-induced cavitation and
advanced laser-based manufacturing and surface engineering.\n\nA major c
urrent focus is developing transparent yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) c
ranial implants that provide permanent optical access to the brain for no
ninvasive imaging\, sensing and therapeutic light delivery. This technolo
gy could improve the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders\,
including traumatic brain injury and brain cancer\, while reducing repeat
ed invasive procedures.\n\nThrough the NSF Engineering Research Center AT
P-Bio\, we are also developing laser-driven platforms to safely rewarm cr
yogenically preserved biological specimens\, improving the viability of e
mbryos\, larvae and other living materials and advancing regenerative med
icine\, conservation biology and transplantation science. The seminar wil
 l additionally highlight laser-enabled surface functionalization\, cavita
tion erosion mitigation and optical diagnostics\, illustrating how fundam
ental mechanical engineering concepts can be translated into impactful bi
omedical technologies.\n\nBackground\n\nProf. Guillermo Aguilar earned hi
