 \n\nAbstract: I will discuss my attempt to give a new proof of the necess
 ity of Crawley-Boevey's criterion for the Deligne-Simpson problem. Given 
 finitely many punctures on the projective line and prescribed conjugacy\n
 classes of monodromies around them\, the problem asks for necessary and s
 ufficient conditions for the existence of an irreducible local system wit
 h these local monodromies. Successful proofs have already been given inde
 pendently by Crawley-Boevey and Shu. My own approach contains a gap\, whi
 ch I will explain and put into perspective during the talk.\n\nhttp://nex
