SUMMARY:The Importance of Cross-Language Research in Psycholinguistics
LOCATION:Huntington Beard Crouse Hall Gifford Auditorium\, 111 Crouse Dr\,
  Syracuse\, NY 13210
DESCRIPTION:The Linguistic Studies Program presents The Importance of Cros
s-Language Research in Psycholinguistics with Eszter Ronai from the Depar
tment of Linguistics at Northwestern University.\n\nAbstract: Experimenta
l studies of human language comprehension are known to be limited in thei
r cross-linguistic coverage. In particular\, a large proportion of studie
s focus on English or other Indo-European languages. In this talk\, I pre
sent two case studies from Hungarian\, a Uralic language that is under-re
presented within psycholinguistics – one focusing on the comprehension of
grammatical structure\, and one on the comprehension of discourse. Resul
ts show that Hungarian produces results that are critically different fro
m English\, providing an argument that experimental studies need to take
into account the diversity of human languages.\n\nhttp://next-to-u.app/ev
