DESCRIPTION:Title: Exploring New and Familiar Worlds with Planetary Geolog
ic Mapping\n\nAbstract: In this talk I will focus on my recent work of ge
ologic mapping and interpretation of the new world of asteroid (52246) Do
naldjohanson\, target of NASA’s Lucy mission\, and of the Marius Hills re
gion of our familiar neighboring world\, the Moon.\n\nThe Lucy mission wi
ll study the Jupiter Trojan asteroids\, which are early Solar System reli
cs yet to be explored by a spacecraft (Levison+2021). Prior to the first
Trojan encounter\, Lucy flew by two never-before-visited main-belt astero
ids: asteroid (152830) Dinkinesh in 2023 (Levison+2024) and asteroid (522
 46) Donaldjohanson in 2025 (Marchi+2026). Here I will present the first g
eologic map of the observed portion of Donaldjohanson\, which is ~8 km lo
ng and appears to be an elongated contact binary composed of two lobes (t
he bigger named Olduvai Lobus and the smaller Afar Lobus) joined by a nar
rower neck (named Windover Collum). We infer that mass wasting flowed fro
m Olduvai Lobus to Windover Collum and from Windover Collum to Afar Lobus
. We also observe that the chains of depressions and grooves have a prefe
rred orientation and potential en echelon patterns\, which we interpret a
s pit chains (see also Nichols-Fleming+2026). We use boulders to estimate
the thickness of the outer layer of looser material to be between ~17 m
to ~33 m deep. We also discuss how these geomorphological observations co
rrelate with modeling of the spin period and surface accelerat\n\nhttp://
