SUMMARY:GSI - The Floating World
LOCATION:Sloane Physics Laboratory\, 217 Prospect Street\, New Haven\, CT
 06511
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered why some things sink and some things fl
oat? Is there a connection between you floating in a swimming pool and a
balloon floating in the air? You will be able to discover the answers to
these questions by doing hands on experiments\, while recording and analy
zing data in the same way a scientist does. Activities include: making yo
ur own device to measure volume\, making a boat to determine how much it
can carry without sinking\, and teaching how to make non-spherical bubble
s using straws and pipe cleaners and more!\n\nThe mission of GSI is to mo
tivate\, empower\, and interest middle school students in developing the
skills they need to pursue careers in science. University students and pr
ofessors act as mentors and provide a context for exploring and understan
ding the various disciplines of science through hands-on activities in a
laboratory environment.\n\nIt is a free program for students in sixth\, s
eventh\, and eighth grade who are interested in learning more about scien
ce.\n\nGSI was founded in 2007 as Girls’ Science Investigations to close
the gender gap in science. All are welcome to attend and volunteer.\n\nht
