SUMMARY:Colloquium by Professor Changhui Tan\, University of South Carolin
 a
LOCATION:MSB 318: Mathematical Sciences Building\, Room 318
DESCRIPTION:Our Colloquium series offers a diverse platform for research s
cholars\, faculty\, students\, and industry experts to share and exchange
ideas\, fostering discussion and networking across mathematics\, statist
ics\, and data science.\n\nProfessor Changhui Tan from University of Sout
h Carolina will speak at this week's colloquium on "The Primitive Equatio
ns in Atmospheric Dynamics and Related Nonlocal Fluid Models."\n\nAbstrac
t:\n\nThe primitive equations—also known as the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes
equations—serve as a foundational mathematical model for large-scale atm
ospheric and oceanic dynamics. Strikingly\, their analytical behavior sit
s between two extreme regimes: while the inviscid equations are notorious
ly ill-posed (exhibiting instabilities worse than the 3D Euler equations)
\, full horizontal viscosity renders them globally well-posed\, displayin
g regularizing properties even stronger than the standard Navier-Stokes s
ystem.\n\nIn this talk\, we explore the transition between these regimes
by considering primitive equations with fractional horizontal dissipation
. We will discuss how varying the strength of fractional operators dictat
es sharp boundary lines between ill-posedness\, local well-posedness\, an
d global well-posedness. To provide a broader perspective\, we will also
survey other related nonlocal fluid models\, highlighting common analytic
al frameworks and mechanisms where fractional and nonlocal operators gove
rn fluid motion.\n\nSpeaker Bio: Changhui Tan is an Associate Professor i
