SUMMARY:The Joy of Failure: Lack\, Desire\, and Jouissance in Dystopian Co
 ntexts
LOCATION:Jonsson Conference Room (JO 4.122)
DESCRIPTION:The Joy of Failure: Lack\, Desire\, and Jouissance in Dystopia
 n Contexts\nGreg Shows\nDoctoral Candidate: Humanities\n\nThis talk explo
res utopian failure\, loss and sacrifice through a dialectical examinatio
n of Margaret Atwood’s Flood Trilogy and an antinomic examination of Octa
via Butler’s Parable Trilogy. Drawing on theorists such as Todd McGowan\,
it considers how an ethics rooted in loss and sacrifice produces enjoyme
nt beyond pleasure and pain. Three examples of cultural practice rooted i
n sacrifice suggest possibilities for restructuring the human relationshi
p to desire and\, by implication\, the arrangement of human civilization.
